Titanium boride powder, gray or gray-black in color, has a hexagonal crystal structure. It has a high hardness and a melting point of 2980degC. Titanium diboride can withstand 1000°C of oxygen and is stable in HCl or HF acids. Titanium diboride can be used to prepare ceramic composite products. Its resistance to corrosion of molten steel makes it ideal for the production of electrolytic cell electrodes as well as molten crucibles.
The main characteristics of Titanium Boride
Titanium boride, TiB 2 It is the most stable of all boron compounds and titanium. It has a C32 structure and is bound using valence bond. It is a metallicloid compound in the hexagonal system. The complete crystal’s structural parameters are: a = 0.3028nm, and C = 0.3228nm. The crystal structure is made up of the boron atomic and the titanium-atomic planes. This creates a two-dimensional network structure in which B and three other Bs are combined by covalent bonds. An extra electron forms an enormous p bond. This graphite-like TiB atomic layered structure, and the Ti outer electrons, determine the high electrical conductivity as well as metallic luster. 2 This material has high hardness and brilliance because of the Ti-B bonds between the titanium atomic plan and the boron plane.
