tantalum ball is a spherical shaped metal part made of tantalum. The tantalum ball is headed from rolls of tantalum wire and then pressed into the spherical shape by a heading machine.
X-medics produces high quality tantalum balls that are medical grade and certified to ISO 13485. They are tested for cytotoxicity according to ISO 10093-5 (Biological evaluation of medical devices — Part 5: Tests for in vitro cytotoxicity) by an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory and all of our products are REACH and RoSH compliant.
Our spherical tantalum ball can be used as medical markers for diagnostic imaging and surgery, in particular as x-ray markers of bone implants for hip replacements. Moreover, the balls provide excellent radiographic opacity and biocompatibility as well as good mechanical properties.
The balls are suitable for surgical quality plastic and titanium alloy implants. In addition, the spherical shaped medical tantalum balls are also used for orthopedic applications like the preoperative embolization of intracranial arteriovenous malformations.
In total hip arthroplasty, the position and migration of tantalum balls have been reviewed. Among 64 patients with total hip arthroplasty, 40% of them had one or more tantalum balls that were seen outside the proximal femur on postoperative radiographs.
In these cases, angiographic embolization with Trufill (Cordis, Miami Lakes, FL) was performed to increase the radiographic opacity of the implanted n-BCA and ethiodized oil. The combination of n-BCA and a lubricant increases the polymerization rate of the adhesive, thus providing an increased radiopacity.
