Niobium (Nb), also known as columbium, is a soft, silvery refractory metal that resists corrosion. It is often used in superconductor materials that help create magnets that can generate massive amounts of electricity with very little energy loss.
The element becomes superconducting at very low temperatures and has the highest critical temperature of all the elemental superconductors. It is often used in high-energy physics experiments to increase the speed of subatomic particles without using ever-increasing amounts of power. Many of the accelerators that power these experiments use chambers cast from pure or alloyed niobium.
Niobium has a wide variety of applications, including being used to coat glass and make it glare-resistant. This coating is also used in lenses for cameras, televisions and computer screens. It is also added to stainless steels and other alloys to improve their strength and corrosion resistance, particularly in high-temperature jet engines and rockets.
