Inorganic compounds in which the largest halogen atom is iodine and the heaviest metal atom is mercury. It is a scarlet red, odorless, tasteless powder which sinks in water and turns yellow at elevated temperatures. It is very toxic by ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption. It is soluble in hot ethanol, acetone, chloroform and ethyl acetate and slightly soluble in cold ethanol and in castor oil. It is light sensitive and must be stored away from oxidizing agents.
mercury iodide IS VERY POISONOUS TO DOGS AND CATS. EFFECTS ARE INDICATIVE OF MERCURIAL TOXICITY, INCLUDING THROMBOCYTOPESTISIS AND NEUROPATHY. THEREFORE, OINTMENTS CONTAINING THIS INGREDIENT HAVE BEEN USED FOR MANY DISEASES IN THE VETERINARY DISTRICT. MERCURIAL IODIDE POISONING FROM DIRECT ABSORPTION INTO THE SKIN AND INTERNAL MUSCLES HAS ALSO BEEN REPORTED.
Acute toxic concn to monolayer cell cultures (Hepl-2, Vero and human amnion) was the lowest for mercuric iodide, followed by that of mercuric chloride. Both substances markedly inhibited cell growth and multiplication and caused degeneration of the cells. Mercure iodide was also markedly embryotoxic, but the severity depended on dosage and intake schedule.
American Elements offers a variety of moderate to highly concentrated liquid solutions of mercury(II) iodide for use in chemical synthesis, solution deposition and other applications. These solutions can be made to customer specified concentrations or to the maximum stoichiometric quantity and are packaged in 55 gallon drums, smaller units and larger liquid totes.
