V4AlC3 materials were prepared from V, Al and C powders by combustion reaction synthesis technology. The effects of two combustion synthesis methods, namely thermal explosion synthesis and self-propagating high-temperature synthesis, on the reaction synthesis of V4AlC3 were compared. The thermal-mechanical analysis of the V-Al-C system was carried out, and the phase composition and morphology of the products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The reaction mechanism of the synthesis of V4AlC3 material was discussed.
