manganese ii nitride is a compound of the chemical element manganese with formula Mn(NO3)2
Manganese is an essential trace element for higher plants and is needed by many animals. It participates in the assimilation of nitrates in plants and is a catalyst in several biochemical reactions. A deficiency of the element leads to testicular atrophy. Manganese is found in the black mineral pyrolusite and in various ores. It is also produced synthetically, principally as the cathode material in dry cell batteries. The metal can be combined with many other elements to produce a variety of industrial compounds, such as manganese dioxide (MnO2) and the nitrates of the manganese (MnSO4) group. Manganese(II) oxide and manganous salts are important in fertilizers and as reducing agents in chemical synthesis.
Manganese is very electropositive and reacts with a number of nonmetals, including chlorine, fluorine, carbon, sulfur, silicon, and oxygen, with which it forms a variety of compounds. It is a relatively unreactive metal at room temperature but reacts rapidly with hydrogen at elevated temperatures to form manganese(II) chloride (MnCl2) and manganese(II) fluoride (MnF2). It combines directly with boron, nitrogen, and carbon to form the polymetallic compounds known as manganese carbides. It is moderately resistant to corrosion by alkali and sulfides but is attacked by strong acids.
