Zirconia is created by burning air at 700. ZrC is inert with water.

Zirconium carbonide is a high-melting point material that has high hardness, excellent high temperature resistance and great hardness. It is used to make solid propellant for rocket motors. Used in the production process of alloy steel. It can be used to make zirconium tetrachloride and zirconium tetrachloride.

What is Zirconium Carbide ZrC used for?

For nuclear reactors, fire-resistant coatings can be made from niobium and zirconium carbide. Because it has a low neutron absorption cross-section and weak sensitivity for radiation damage, it is suitable to be used as a coating on nuclear fuel uranium dioxide and thorium dioxide particles. The coating is typically applied in a fluidized-bed reactor using thermal chemical vapor deposition. It has high emissivity, high current capacity at high temperatures and is therefore a promising material for thermal photosolar radiators as well as field emitter tips or arrays.

It is also used in abrasives and cladding, cermets as well, as cutting tools.
