Calcium Chloride Dihydrate

Calcium chloride dihydrate (CaCl2(H2O)2) is an ionic compound that is an excellent source of calcium ions in a solution. It is also a good displacer of ions from a solution. The inorganic substance is also an effective desiccant.

This compound is often used in biochemistry. In particular, the CaCl2(H2O)2 compound is a commonly found reagent in tissue culture media. The ionic form of the substance is highly hygroscopic, requiring to be stored in tight-sealed containers. Moreover, it is not recommended for human consumption. However, it has a wide range of applications in the microbiological world.

One of the more interesting uses for calcium chloride is as a pigment for glass. A lot of this substance is produced through the Solvay process. Also, it is a byproduct of the Wacker process. Another use for the substance is in printing inks and coatings. Ammonium copper(II) chloride dihydrate is also useful in the manufacturing of glass.

Another useful application of this substance is as a co-catalyst. The compound is used in the chemical reaction that catalyzes the production of chlorine from hydrogen chloride.

Another important use of this substance is in the manufacture of polymers. The substance is also a potent reducing agent and sensitizing agent for plastics. Moreover, it is used in corrosion inhibitors. Lastly, it is an ingredient in soldering flux.
