Boron carbide uses

Posted on 2023-03-18
Boron carbide (B4C) Also known as Black Diamond. It is greyish black and is very man-made.

Boron carbonide structure hexagonal crystal. Boron carbide density stands at 2.52g/cm3. Boron carbonide melting temperature stands at 2450. The material decomposes very quickly when heated above 2800.

Boron carbide properties

Boron carbide does not dissolve in water or organic solvents. Boron carbide, also known as semiconductive or neutron absorber because of its large cross-sectional thermal neutron capture and high neutron absorption capacities is called neutron absorber.

Why is boron caride so good?

Extreme hardness

Low density

The melting point is high.

High elastic modulus

Chemical inertia

Cross-section of High Neutron Absorption

Outstanding thermoelectric performance

Boron carbonide uses

The material is suitable for many high performance applications due to its appealing combination of properties.

It is a good grinding powder to use for water jet cutting, polishing, and grinding metals. It can be used for drilling, polishing and all other types of processing, including grinding, drilling, and polishing of any cemented caride tool, mold, part, component, or gemstone. With the right amount of oil and water, you can turn Boron Carbide into polishing or grinding paste.

This material is ideal for making vehicle armor or car body parts because it has low specific gravity, hardness, and moderate toughness.

Boron carbide has been widely used to shield materials, control rods and neutron detectors within nuclear reactors. Because it absorbs neutrons while not forming radionuclides of long duration, it is also widely utilized in these applications.

Boron carbide, which is a semiconductor of the p type, can be used in electronic devices that are capable to work at high temperatures because it can also function as an amplifier.

Boron carbide also makes a great p-type thermoelectric material.

These are just a few of the many uses for boron caride:

Sandblasting nozzle.

Bearings for ball and roller.

Sealing parts

The wire drawing die.

Bulletproof vest

Boron carbide Price

Price is affected by many things, such as the demand and supply in the market and industry trends. Economic activity and market sentiment are also important.
