Aluminum diboride AlB2 is the chemical formula of this binary compound, which is formed from aluminum and boran. Aluminum diboride has a red color under normal pressure and temperature.

Aluminum Diboride Powder Properties

Aluminum diboride decomposes when heated. It is stable in dilute cold acid but not in hot hydrochloric or nitric. Aluminum diboride comes from mixing aluminum powder with boron after it has been heated.
Aluminum boride (also known as AlB12) is one of two compounds containing aluminum and boran. AlB12 has a black monoclinic crystal that is shiny and has a specific gravity of 2,55 (18degC). It is insoluble with water, alkali or acid. Nitric acid hot decomposes it. It is produced by melting together boron, sulfur and aluminium.

The structure is similar to that of magnesium diboride. The metallic conductivity of single crystals of aluminium diboride is parallel to the hexagonal surface of the substrate.

Aluminum Diboride Powder Preparation

Aluminum boride’s structure is similar to other intermetallic compounds. The main factor affecting its structure is the crystallization of aluminum metal and of boron. Aluminum borides consist of AlB2, AlB4 or AlB12.

Two simple substances with a melting point above 600 can react to form aluminum diboride AlB2. This is a multi-layered structure. Al atoms directly overlap (A, mode A), and B-atoms are filled into the triangular pillars created by the direct overlapping of Al-atoms.
