Thick-walled tubes are an excellent choice for some bracelet hinges. This material is also used for certain hinge-based catches.
Some hinge makers keep several sizes of thick-walled tubing on hand and rapidly draw them down to the size required when a job comes up, which saves them the cost of having to purchase an entire range of smaller sizes.
One advantage of a thick-walled tube is that it can be easily rolled on a wire rolling mill to get a taper at the end for drawing. This helps to prevent the end from twisting, as the material stretches when it’s drawn.
Another benefit is that it’s usually very easy to obtain a polished wire core for the end of the tube. The core wire is then removed at the end of drawing, reducing the amount of scrap material that has to be cut off.
